The Montebello Islands archipelago consist of 174 islands and were abandoned by the local aboriginals about 8,000 years ago as sea level rose. In 1952 and 1956 the British conducted 3 atomic bomb tests. Parts of Tremouille Island where the tests were conducted still have high levels of radioactivity preventing stays over one hour. We refrained from the Zodiac cruise there in favour of a short cruise to a sheltered bay where we paddled in the crystal clear waters. Too far south for crocs.
